FAQ about Thin Film Capacitors
-
1. What is a film capacitor?
Film capacitors are capacitors with plastic film as dielectric, usually metal foil as electrode, and are constructed by overlapping metal foil and plastic film from both ends and winding into a cylindrical shape. According to the type of plastic film used, film capacitors can be divided into polyester capacitors (also known as Mylar capacitors), polypropylene capacitors (also known as PP capacitors), polystyrene capacitors (also known as PS capacitors) and polycarbonate capacitors.
Structure and working principle
The internal structure of film capacitors mainly consists of metal foil (or foil obtained by metallizing plastic) as electrodes and plastic film as dielectric. It is obtained by winding or stacking process. Different arrangements of foil and film lead to a variety of construction methods. When voltage is applied, an electric field is formed between the two electrode plates (usually metal foil), which passes through the film material. The effect of this electric field causes electrons to transfer from one pole to the other, thereby storing charge inside the capacitor. -
2. What is the difference between MPP capacitors and MKP capacitors?
The main difference between MPP capacitors and MKP capacitors lies in their structure and application areas.
Structural Differences
MPP capacitors: MPP capacitors usually refer to multilayer polypropylene film capacitors, which are composed of multiple layers of film stacked together. This structure gives MPP capacitors greater flexibility in volume and capacity, and is suitable for applications that require larger capacitance values.
MKP capacitors: MKP capacitors are single-layer metallized polypropylene film capacitors with a relatively simple structure. Due to their single-layer design, MKP capacitors perform well under high-frequency conditions and are suitable for high-frequency circuits and applications that require high performance.
Application Areas
MPP capacitors: Due to the multilayer structure and large capacity of MPP capacitors, they are often used in general application scenarios such as ordinary electronic circuits, power switches, and filtering. They perform well in circuits that require larger capacitance values.
MKP capacitors: MKP capacitors are more suitable for high-performance audio equipment, inverters, high-frequency circuits, and other fields that require higher capacitance performance. Due to their excellent high-frequency performance and low loss factor, MKP capacitors perform well in applications that require precise signal transmission and high stability.
What is a film dielectric?
Film dielectrics refer to capacitors with plastic film as the dielectric, commonly known as film capacitors or plastic film capacitors. Its main components include plastic films such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene or polycarbonate.
Structure and working principle
The basic structure of film capacitors includes metal foil (or foil obtained by metallizing plastic) as electrode plates and plastic film as dielectric. Through winding or stacking processes, different arrangements of foil and film form a variety of construction methods. The common construction method is to overlap the metal foil and plastic film from both ends and then wind them into a cylindrical shape.

3. Why use film resistors?
Film resistors have many important functions in electronic devices, mainly including limiting current, regulating voltage and current in circuits, and serving as sampling resistors. Specifically:
Limiting current: In the circuit, the film resistor hinders the current through its internal resistance material, thereby protecting other components in the circuit from damage by excessive current.
Regulating voltage and current in the circuit: Film resistors can be used for voltage division and current shunting. By reasonably selecting the resistance value of the resistor, the voltage and current in the circuit can be accurately controlled to ensure stable operation and optimized performance of the circuit.
As sampling resistor: In situations where it is necessary to monitor the current or voltage changes in the circuit in real time, thin film resistors can convert current or voltage into a measurable voltage signal, which is convenient for subsequent processing and analysis.
In addition, thin film resistors have the following advantages:
High precision: The manufacturing process of thin film resistors gives them extremely high resistance accuracy, usually up to ±0.1% or higher, which is suitable for high-demand circuit design.
Good temperature stability: The performance of thin film resistors is very stable at different temperatures, and the temperature coefficient is usually around ±5ppm/°C, which can maintain its performance in extreme environments.
Miniaturization: Due to the structural characteristics of thin film resistors, they are usually small in size and light in weight, which is very suitable for the needs of modern miniaturized electronic devices.
Wide frequency response: Thin film resistors perform well in high-frequency applications and can effectively reduce signal distortion.
