1. Is TRIAC an SCR?
TRIAC is not an SCR. TRIAC and SCR are two different semiconductor devices, although they both belong to the thyristor family, they have different characteristics and applications.
Definition and basic characteristics
SCR (thyristor): SCR, or silicon controlled rectifier, is a high-power electrical component, also known as a thyristor. It has high power control capabilities and is suitable for applications that require high power control, such as power systems and industrial controls. The working principle of SCR is based on the coupling and positive feedback effect between the PNP junction and the NPN junction. SCR usually requires a trigger signal to achieve switching control, but after turning on, the current can be maintained by itself until the gate current is cut off.
TRIAC: TRIAC is a three-terminal bidirectional thyristor switch that can switch and control AC power in both directions of the sinusoidal waveform. Unlike SCR, TRIAC is a "bidirectional" switching device that can be triggered to turn on by positive and negative voltages applied to its anode and positive and negative trigger pulses applied to its gate. TRIAC behaves like two conventional SCRs connected in reverse parallel, but due to this arrangement, the two SCRs share a common gate terminal, all packaged in a three-terminal package. -
2. Is the SCR output AC or DC?
The output of SCR (Silicon Controlled Rectifier) is DC.
SCR is a four-layer three-terminal semiconductor device, composed of four layers of PNPN semiconductor materials, with three pins: anode (Anode), cathode (Cathode) and gate (Gate). When a positive voltage is applied between the anode and cathode, the SCR is in the off state and does not conduct electricity. When the gate receives a trigger signal, the PNPN structure inside the SCR forms a conductive channel, which makes the anode and cathode conduct, and current begins to flow. Therefore, the output of the SCR is a DC current. -
3. What is the difference between SCR and triac?
SCR (unidirectional thyristor) and triac (TRIAC) have significant differences in structure, working principle and application scenarios.
Structure and working principle
Single-way thyristor (SCR): SCR is a three-terminal four-layer semiconductor device composed of a PNPN structure. It has unidirectional conductivity and can only conduct in a specific direction. When a positive voltage is applied between the anode and cathode and a sufficient trigger current is applied to the control electrode (gate), the SCR will conduct. After conduction, the SCR remains in the on state even if the trigger current of the control electrode is removed.
Three-terminal bidirectional thyristor (TRIAC): TRIAC is structurally equivalent to two unidirectional thyristors connected in reverse, and has bidirectional conductivity. It can conduct in both the positive and negative half-cycles of the alternating current. Applying a positive pulse or a negative pulse to the control electrode (G electrode) of TRIAC can make the device conduct in the forward or reverse direction. The advantage of TRIAC is that the control circuit is simple and there is no reverse withstand voltage problem, which is particularly suitable for use as an AC contactless switch.
