What is a digital potentiometer IC?

A digital potentiometer IC (Integrated Circuit) is an electronic component used for analog signal processing. They are often used to replace traditional mechanical potentiometers, providing more precise and repeatable adjustments.
It has the same function as a regular potentiometer, but uses a digital signal and switch instead of mechanical action. This is usually done by using a resistor ladder (a string of small resistors connected in series). Each step of the ladder has an electronic switch. Only one switch is closed at any time. A closed switch determines the wiper position and resistance ratio. This resistor ladder digital potentiometer is an example of a linear taper. The step size of the ladder diagram determines the resolution of the digital potentiometer.

Working principle of digital potentiometer:

A digital potentiometer consists of a series of resistors that are configured via a digital signal (usually an SPI or I2C bus).
They adjust the resistance value by changing the connection points between different resistors.

Digital potentiometer definition
A digital potentiometer is a variable resistor controlled by a digital signal rather than mechanical movement.

Characteristics of digital potentiometers
Digital potentiometers are integrated circuits (ICs). Some models have non-volatile memory (e.g., EEPROM or flash memory) that remembers potentiometer resistance settings. When there is no onboard memory, the wiper's initial position tends to be the middle position. Due to their relatively small size compared to traditional potentiometers, multiple potentiometers can be packaged on a single chip. Digital potentiometer ICs available with up to 6 channels.

The number of steps available determines the resolution of the digital potentiometer. The following table lists the common step values available, including the number of digits:

Step count
Bit             5       6       7         8             9             10
Footsteps 32    64   128      256     Chapter 512  1024
Digital resistors are available in a variety of values, but the most commonly used is 10 kΩ. Other common values are 5, 50 and 100 kΩ. The standard tolerance is 20%, but digital potentiometers are now available with tolerances as low as 1%.

Something to consider when you start using digital potentiometers is that most potentiometers are rated for 5 V (to power logic circuits). This makes using them as a direct replacement for traditional potentiometers a bit tricky.

Application areas
Audio/video equipment: Used for volume control and tone adjustment in audio amplifiers, mixers and other equipment.
Communication equipment: Used in wireless communication and network equipment to adjust signal gain or attenuation.
Industrial Control: Used for precise control of voltage and current in automation equipment and process control systems.
Digital potentiometers can be used in any application where a trimmer potentiometer or preset resistor would normally be used. The biggest advantage is that they can be controlled in an automatic closed loop. When used for tuning, recalibration can be performed at defined intervals via the microcontroller. Digital potentiometer applications include brightness and contrast control for displays, gain control, and Wheatstone bridges. The figure below shows an example application of a digital potentiometer for volume control. Potentiometers can be controlled via up/down signals, push buttons or rotary encoders.
