TSMC enters a new round of price increases, Samsung chip foundry services increase prices by 20%
Due to the strong global demand for integrated circuit chips, from last fall to this spring, foundries such as TSMC, GlobalFoundries, PSMC, SMIC and UMC have raised their prices by more than 10%. Among them, UMC has increased almost every quarter. They have notified customers that they will increase their quotations in September. In November, the quotations of some products will increase. The prices will continue to increase in the first quarter of 2022. The average increase is estimated to be 10%. The quotation has reached a new high of US$2800~3000, surpassing TSMC, and the 22nm process quotation will follow.

SMIC’s latest semi-annual report shows that the number of wafers sold by the company in the first half of the year increased by 16.2% from 2.8 million approximately 8-inch wafers in the same period last year to 3.3 million approximately 8-inch wafers during the period. , The average selling price increased from 4143 yuan in the same period last year to 4390 yuan in this period.

Saiwei Electronics stated on the interactive platform on August 31 that the average selling price of the company's MEMS wafers from 2017 to 2020 was approximately US$1700/piece, US$1800/piece, US$2200/piece and US$2700/piece, respectively. The average selling price of the company's MEMS wafers in the first half of the year was approximately US$3,600 per piece.

Just recently TSMC announced the latest round of 20% price increases, and Samsung immediately followed up with a 20% increase. In the future, it is expected that more wafer foundries will announce price increases, and the global semiconductor chip market and downstream consumer electronics will increase prices further. It's already inevitable.

According to the South Korean technology media website "TheElec" reported on Tuesday (August 31), Samsung and South Korean foundry Key Foundry have notified customers that they will increase foundry prices in the second half of this year. People familiar with the matter said Samsung plans to increase foundry prices. Increase by 15%-20%. The specific price increase depends on the customer’s order size, chip type and contract period

At the same time, back-end process companies in the South Korean wafer industry are also raising prices. Packaging companies and assembly plants will raise prices in September, and the new prices will come into effect in 4 to 5 months.

At present, the main products of foundry include NVIDIA's RTX 30 series graphics chips, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888/888 Plus chips, etc. After the foundry price increase, the cost of RTX 30 series chips will also increase, which will affect the final price.

In the latest Q2 global foundry market rankings announced by TrendForce, TSMC is the only one with a Q2 output value of US$13.3 billion, an increase of 3.1% from the previous month, ranking first in the world. At present, TSMC is the world's largest chip foundry company, accounting for about half of the global chip foundry market, and some processes share up to 70%. Apple, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Nvidia are all customers of TSMC.
