Micron Technology Inc new power semiconductor for electric vehicles reduces power consumption by 20%
Denso, Japan's top auto parts supplier, has developed a power semiconductor device for electric vehicles that reduces energy loss by 20 percent. The technology could do more for companies to differentiate themselves in a crowded market for electric vehicles.
In related reports, Denso's new RC-IGBT integrates a diode into a power semiconductor device called an insulated gate bipolar transistor, which is about 30 percent smaller than existing products on the market, while also reducing power losses.

Power chips, as well as analog semiconductor devices that monitor battery health, are critical to the performance of electric vehicles. Denso is enhancing in-house development and production of these components, rather than outsourcing design and production like other automotive chips.
Denso is working to make its silicon-based power chips more cost-competitive. The latest RC-IGBT integrates a diode into a power semiconductor device called an insulated gate bipolar transistor, which is about 30 percent smaller than existing products on the market, while also reducing power losses.
In addition, Denso announced in April this year that it will cooperate with UMC, a Taiwanese contract chip maker, to produce power semiconductors on 300mm wafers at UMC Japan's manufacturing plant as early as next year. Larger wafers can improve production efficiency, and Denso sees a cost reduction of about 20% compared to standard 200mm wafers.
